KATA PENGANTAR


Puji syukur penulis ucapkan ke hadirat Tuhan Yang Maha Kuasa atas limpahan berkat-Nya
penulis bisa menyelesaikan buku Pengantar Sistem Informasi Geografis, yang dimaksudkan
sebagai buku ajar untuk mata kuliah Sistem Informasi Geografis.

Sistem Informasi Geografis merupakan sistem komputer untuk mengumpulkan, menyimpan,
mengquery, menganalisis, dan menampilkan data yang diacu secara geografis. Data yang diacu
secara geografis mendeskripsikan lokasi maupun karakteristik objek spasial. Kemampuan Sistem
Informasi Geografis untuk menangani lokasi maupun data atribut (basis data) membedakan
Sistem Informasi Geografis dari sistem informasi lainnya. Visualisasi lokasi dalam tampilan peta
digital serta basis data yang mengacu padanya memungkinkan melihat yang tersembunyi dibalik
lokasi geografis dan data kuantitatif, dan juga memungkinkan melihat relasi antar fenomena
yang tampaknya tak berhubungan.

Sejak tahun 1970-an Sistem Informasi Geografis telah menjadi bagian penting dalam
pengelolaan sumber daya alam dan bidang-bidang yang berkaitan dengan ilmu kebumian.
Namun dalam perkembangannya aplikasi Sistem Informasi Geografis menjadi semakin luas
seperti : politik, sosial budaya, ekonomi dan militer. Oleh karena itu, di Amerika Serikat, lebih
dari 20 bidang akademik mempelajari Sistem Informasi Geografis.

Buku ini memberikan dasar-dasar teoritis mengenai Sistem Informasi Geografis mencakup
sistem koordinat, model data, input data, editing data spasial, dan pengelolaan data atribut (basis
data). Sedangkan pengetahuan praktis dapat diperoleh melalui praktikum yang mencakup
pengenalan dan pemakaian software Sistem Informasi Geografis.

Semoga buku ini dapat memberikan manfaat, dan tak lupa penulis mengharapkan kritik dan
saran dari pembaca demi perbaikan buku ini.
